An 86-year-old Thamesville man was fatally injured after being struck by a vehicle on Longwoods Road just before midnight last Wednesday, April 30. Chatham-Kent emergency crews responded to the collision involving a pedestrian and vehicle on Longwoods Road between Dew Drop Road and Huff Side Road, west of Thamesville, just before 11:45 p.m.Emergency services arrived on the scene, where the Thamesville man was pronounced deceased.

Chatham-Kent Council unanimously agreed with Ward 3 East Kent Councillor John Wright – that the dangerous Kent Bridge Road-Ridge Line intersection needs to be converted to a four-way stop. Council approved recommendations from the Chatham-Kent Engineering Department and hired a consultant that a four-way stop to control traffic in all directions is the safest measure for the Rushton’s Corners intersection, which has been the scene of 24 serious collisions since 2017.

During Monday night’s meeting, Chatham-Kent Council was asked to approve converting the Kent Bridge Road-Ridge Line intersection into a four-way stop. The Chatham-Kent Engineering department was bringing its recommendation to Council based on studies conducted by a consulting company. The intersection currently has stop signs for north and southbound traffic on Kent Bridge Road, while east-west traffic on Ridge Line has the right-of-way.

The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance has opened a Measles Information Centre to provide direction for people who have been exposed to the measles virus but have not been fully vaccinated. The clinic is located outside the Emergency Department at the Chatham hospital site and is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last registration at 4 p.m. However, visits to the Measles Information Centre are by appointment only.

The annual Ridgetown Knights of Columbus St. Raphael Council 8435 recently held the annual Free Throw Contest for the town’s three elementary schools. The winners in each age and gender division will compete in the District 51 Free Throw Competition this Saturday at Ridgetown District High School. The local shooters will take on the winners from the Blenheim Fr Ladislaus Council 7744 and Thamesville’s Pope Paul VI Council 7251 competitions.
Firefighters battle blaze in extreme cold

For the second time in less than a week, local fire crews had to battle extreme weather conditions while fighting a working fire. Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue Station 10 Orford and Station 11 Ridgetown responded to a house fire on Thomson Line (Duart) last Tuesday night that was called in around 8:35 p.m.Firefighters and units from the Orford and Ridgetown stations responded fully, while Station 9 Bothwell also responded for tanker support.
Rondeau cottagers pleased with revised lease agreement

The change is in the mail – and the Rondeau cottage owners couldn’t be happier. The Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks mailed a revised lease agreement to the 270-plus cottage owners last week for them to review and sign. Cottage owners, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent and stakeholders received notice in late December that the Ministry was extending leases on cottages in Rondeau Provincial Park for 14 years, good until Dec. 31, 2038.
