Michael BushnellContributing HistorianLocated on the corner of Prospect Boulevard and Amie Court, Garfield Elementary School was one of the first Ward schools in Kansas City. The imposing red brick building bore the address of 421 Wabash St., and was erected in 1884 — complete with a bell tower. In 1909, this building was extensively remodeled as seen in the 1940 tax assessment photograph. New entrances were built, the bell tower was removed and a new lunchroom was added in the building’s basement.

Michael BushnellContributing HistorianThis week’s postcard — published by the Southwest News Company of Kansas City — shows the bandstand and comfort station in Observation Park, Kansas City, Mo.This small, 4.5 acre park, located at the corner of 20th Street and Jarboe, was originally acquired by the city’s Fire and Water Commission for use as a reservoir to serve the industrial West Bottoms area some 300 feet below. The part of the tract not used for a reservoir was developed as a small park.

Michael Bushnell ContributorThe Independence Avenue CID’s Zone 3 stretches roughly nine-tenths of a mile between Van Brunt Boulevard on the west and Hardesty Avenue on the east. Much like Zone 2, this part of the Avenue has its own challenges in terms of development and quality of life issues. Neighborhoods bordering the Avenue in this zone are the Indian Mound neighborhood on the north and again, the Lykins Neighborhood on the south.
