    The trajectory of the left can, historically, be plotted along two axes. Temporally, the left tries to push society toward greater justice and equality, hastening the work of progress. Socially, it champions the interests of workers and ordinary people as opposed to elites. Most of the time, these axes harmonize: Political, social and cultural progress often advances the interests of society’s lower ranks.

    Honor is usually considered a good thing. Given that fact, should we be worried that UNC-Chapel Hill recently discontinued its longstanding student-run Honor Court? On July 17, 2024, Provost Christopher Clemens and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Amy Johnson sent a message to the campus community entitled “Adapting the Student Conduct Process.” While the email was full of the pandering at which university administrators excel, it was clear that “adapting” really meant the end of something.
