Deep Freeze: A Novel by Michael C. Grumley (Forge Books). Reviewed by Lawrence De Maria. “Grumley, the author of the Breakthrough series, is certainly a good writer. His previous novels have more positive reviews than I have brain synapses, and his latest has been lauded by fellow thriller writers. (The question of blurbs’ reliability is best left for another time — or perhaps to science.) But Deep Freeze, the first installment in his new Revival series, left me cold; I just could not warm up to it.

When reading Michael C. Grumley’s Deep Freeze, I couldn’t help but recall the 1973 Woody Allen movie, “Sleeper,” in which the character played by Allen is revived after being frozen for 200 years. Of course, Allen and Grumley aside, cryogenics is serious business.

Michael C. Grumley, author of the Breakthrough and Monument series, pens a stand-alone thriller that is reminiscent of a Michael Crichton, James Rollins or Preston & Child novel. Full of surprises and a few shocking turns, DEEP FREEZE opens as a bus packed with men, women and children takes a dive off a bridge into a freezing river. A man gallantly pushes a mother and her child to safety, but his fate is uncertain and the bus sinks quickly into the frigid water.

The hilarious and controversial host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher has written his funniest, most opinionated, and most necessary book ever. What This Comedian Said Will Shock You is a brilliantly astute and acerbically funny vivisection of American life, politics, and culture. Florida Republicans have introduced a new bill that would make it defamation to accuse someone of racism, sexism, homophobia, or transphobia ― silencing basically any accusations of discrimination.

The beautiful, crumbling hilltop town of Becchina is among them, but its mayor has taken drastic measures to rebuild―selling abandoned homes to anyone in the world for a single Euro, as long as the buyer promises to live there for at least five years.
