Deal’s done. Settlement approved. For years, you’ve heard about this lawsuit, House vs. NCAA, and we’ve written countless pieces about this very dense and sometimes hard-to-follow legal matter. It’s gone on so long, frankly, that I’ve forgotten who the “House” is in “House vs. NCAA.” Bet some of you thought it was the House of Representatives. Be honest. (He is an Arizona State swimmer, Grant House, who originally filed the suit in 2020). But, as of late Friday night, the case was settled.

We wrote this week about the Hugh Freeze era at Auburn, how it’s stagnant and the need for urgency. He’s lost more than he’s won through two seasons, so it feels like something needs to change. In the interest of fairness, we can dig deeper into the context of the situation as Year 3 approaches. We’ll take a look at other coaches hired in the same cycle, Freeze’s history and how other new hires handled inherited brush fires. To set the baseline, Freeze is 11-14 in two Auburn seasons.

This is an opinion column. Auburn’s better than this. At least it should be, and if you’re being honest, this isn’t the conversation we forecasted entering Year 3 of Hugh Freeze. This guy’s been the master of the quick flip — the HGTV of distressed college football programs. Yet after two seasons, Auburn’s modern farmhouse is still a blueprint, a pallet of shiplap. Looks promising on paper, but are they building for today’s world or an old one? And is the urgency there?
