There are protests in South Korea after the country's president Yoon Suk Yeol declared emergency martial law. South Korean troops have been clashing with protesters outside the nation's parliament building after the country's main opposition leader, Lee Jae-myung, earlier called on members of the public to gather there. Amid the chaotic scenes outside parliament, MPs inside have voted to block the president's declaration, with the speaker saying the law is now invalid.

No matter what political or military changes we see in the Middle East by 7 October 2025, it will certainly be a more fragmented region. No individual power will create more coherence than the current state of affairs. This level of conflict won't last at this level of intensity for another year. If Israel can't win a short war, it can't fight a long one. Its economy is too small, and the leadership's hubris may prove to be a danger.

ISRAEL is trebling down. Not content with devastating attacks on its mortal enemies in Gaza and Lebanon, it has opened up a third front by bombing the Houthi rebels in Yemen. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is spinning more plates and spinning them faster and faster. It is undoubtedly a significant task, but it makes some sense when Israel considers who it thinks is the real, overarching enemy.

All the indications point to an imminent Israeli ground operations into southern Lebanon. Israel is either trying to frighten Hezbollah out of southern Lebanon - or drive it out as and when that doesn't work. The IDF know this is all very dangerous, but they evidently calculate that Hezbollah has certainly been humiliated and severely weakened by their recent activity and may not be able to respond to a ground incursion with much impact.
