    INTRODUCTION Salt rock is a suitable host rock for underground gas storage (e.g. hydrogen), for disposal and storage of nuclear waste (e.g. radioactive fuel), and naturally as an effective seal for trapped oil and gas, predominantly due to excellent self-healing, low permeability, long-term creep behaviour and high entry pressures (Gloyna & Reynolds, 1961; Popp & Kern, 1998; Popp et al., 2001; Zhang et al., 2020).
