You may have heard the saying that attitudes are contagious. I think all firefighters would agree this is an accurate statement. When we start our shift with a negative mindset and attitude, those around us quickly fall in line with this same attitude. If it occurs repeatedly, shift after shift, the entire crew becomes negative, and it creates a downward spiral, sucking in the entire station and perhaps the entire organization.

Fire service officers play a distinct and crucial role in the success and failure of the team, both on and off the fire scene. Fire officers must fulfill two distinct leadership roles that are very different from one another, almost as different as oil and water: that of the wartime leader role and the peacetime leader. This does not typically occur in the private sector.
