For most people, “acoustics” is an alien and inaccessible topic; a “black art.” It’s possible that the average person understands more about astronomy, medicine, and/or law than they do about acoustics. Acoustics tends to be a world of “insider” knowledge. And, as with most industries, even the basic vocabulary can be a significant barrier to entry. Acoustics is divided into many subcategories. Examples are architectural, engineering, biological, environmental, musical, and ultrasonic.

My first conscious awareness that managing the expectations of others was critically important to my various business endeavors, and handling stress and life in general, came about 28 years ago. Since then, this idea has turned into one of my favorite mantras. I’ve shared the idea with many friends and coworkers, and now get a brief sense of satisfaction when I hear them subconsciously applying this concept in their everyday conversations with others.

Over the past 30-plus years I’ve been involved in numerous installation/integration projects. Some were bid jobs, most design build. The vast majority were completed successfully and profitably. There are always exceptions. During this time I’ve watched hardware and software technologies dramatically change; customers come and go; and lots of key people move-on from general contracting, architectural and consulting firms. So, is there anything that hasn’t changed much? Yes.

Every AV system project comes with risk. As consultants, we recognize there may be significant unfamiliarity and even considerable anxiety when it comes to selecting and hiring an AV contractor, or systems integrator as they’re often described today. When private money is in play, it’s a common temptation to skip the professional consultants and choose to work directly with a design/build integrator. But buyer beware: not all systems integrators are created equally.
