U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has in recent days repeatedly denounced what he sees as China’s outsized influence on the Panama Canal – the crucial maritime passageway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. On Dec. 25, 2024, Trump falsely claimed that Chinese soldiers were “operating” the Panama Canal, wishing them a “merry Christmas.” Trump has also directly challenged the Panamanian government, arguing that the U.S. was paying too much in fees to use the canal.

When I first started programming, one of the first things I wanted to do was optimize. No, really. I believe it’s a core tenant of programming: it’s fun, exciting, and makes it where programming is much more than gluing frameworks together. That said, most programmers struggle with basic optimization ideas. Of course, most of those interested in the subject would at least know the bare basics such as algorithmic complexity, always timing your code before optimizing, and avoiding memory leaks.

A new Colorado law required all banks and credit unions chartered in any state to charge only Colorado’s maximum interest rate, not the interest rates allowed by the lender’s state. In an opinion published on June 18, the US District Court for the District of Colorado issued a preliminary injunction staying the application of the Colorado law as to out of state banks not located in Colorado, allowing those states banks to charge Colorado borrowers the interest rate allowed by the lender’s state.
