The Coinage Act of 1792 established a United States Mint in Philadelphia, the temporary capital of the United States until 1800. This Act also decreed the positions required to operate a national Mint. Importantly, the Act also defined the Dollar as the standard monetary unit and defined all denominations.

On April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, attended a play, “Our American Cousin,” at Ford’s Theater in Washington, DC. About 10:15 PM that night, as the play reached a moment when raucous laughter was expected, the famous actor, John Wilkes Booth, entered the President’s box, came up behind Lincoln and shot him in the head. The President was mortally wounded and the next morning at 7:22 AM, Lincoln passed from this world.

The Jefferson Nickel series is one that most dealers don’t pay a great deal of attention to, by virtue of their perceived limited value. Other than the 35% Silver War Nickels, a handful of overdates, and over mintmarks, the series is generally ignored by many. Because the coins are comprised of nickel, except for those World War II issues, many dates including the earliest ones are still floating around in circulation, even the ones from 1938.
