Adolph Alexander Weinman was born in Durmersheim, Germany in 1870. He immigrated with his widowed mother to the United States when he was only 14 years of age. He worked multiple jobs but attended evening classes at the Cooper Union. When he was able to afford it, he went to the Art Students League of New York. By 1890, he studied at the studios of a number of famous artists such as Philip Martiny, Daniel Chester French, Olin Warner, and Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

The Coinage Act of 1792 established a United States Mint in Philadelphia, the temporary capital of the United States until 1800. This Act also decreed the positions required to operate a national Mint. Importantly, the Act also defined the Dollar as the standard monetary unit and defined all denominations.

On April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, attended a play, “Our American Cousin,” at Ford’s Theater in Washington, DC. About 10:15 PM that night, as the play reached a moment when raucous laughter was expected, the famous actor, John Wilkes Booth, entered the President’s box, came up behind Lincoln and shot him in the head. The President was mortally wounded and the next morning at 7:22 AM, Lincoln passed from this world.
