with William G. Batchelder & Michael P. Harding, hosted by James M. Patterson Philip Rieff adopted the categories and language of Freud, but reinterpreted them in a way that supported culture and the moral life. Batchelder and Harding have edited a new volume of essays on Rieff, who they argue is a key thinker for any attempt to diagnose late modern cultural life. The streets were glittery and crowded with families looking for children’s toys and Christmas crackers. An elderly man stood ahead of me at the checkout in Tesco with very little in his basket. It took him ages to pay for his items with cash. And I felt sorry for him as he packed his few things into the plastic bag and struggled out into the rain.
