The Diocese of Exeter’s vision to grow in prayer, make new disciples and serve the people of Devon with joy has evolved over the last five years, with a widespread post-pandemic listening consultation leading to the development of the ‘Next Steps’ strategy to support mission communities to flourish and be sustainable for generations to come. It’s a vision that fits with Jesus’ commission in Mt.28.16-20, which is authoritative for me and I’m sure for many.

As Bishop of Exeter, I am committed to the highest standards of safeguarding and enabling the voices and experiences of abuse survivors to help shape our safeguarding culture. I welcome the General Synod’s decision to transfer the National Safeguarding Team to an independent body (Model 3) and thus move to independent scrutiny, together with the amendment to call for further work as to the legal and practical requirements necessary to implement Model 4. Like everyone who has read the Makin Review we are disturbed and saddened by the details it contains, and its conclusion that the victims of John Smyth were failed by the Church in multiple ways over a number of decades. Safeguarding is at the heart of our mission to love our neighbour and protect the vulnerable.

On Thursday, Oct. 3, I participated in a prayer vigil outside the Essential Conference. The Essential Conference was organized by the Center for Christian Virtue and held in Columbus, Ohio. Funded in part by the Heritage Foundation, the conference was a platform for promoting Project 2025. Project 2025 is a diabolical attempt to recast American society from one that aims to see and welcome all, to one that is centered around a small, select few.
