I’m well known as a “hardware guy,” so when I got the link from Amazon for some announcements on Feb. 25th, I hoped there would be some new Alexa devices. Spoiler alert: There weren’t any. If not devices, then what? As widely rumored, the focus of the announcements was the introduction of wide-ranging uses for AI-driven applications that will greatly expand the capabilities of queries to Amazon Alexa devices and the scope and nature of the responses.

With all the attention for consumer access seeming to shift to smart TVs, or as they are called in the media world “Connected TVs” (CTV) it might be easy to forget that external streaming devices not only started the connected TV revolution, but they started it as the streaming expression of the once ubiquitous set top box. New streaming devices don’t seem appear as frequently as they mused to but recently there is a bumper crop.

Given the natural consumer focus on smart phones it is natural that, aside from the recent press attention to Google’s legal issues, the next Google-centric thing on people’s mind would be the unveiling of their new Pixel phone products on August 13. Unlike in earlier times, there weren’t that many surprises, mostly thanks to well-placed leaks over the past few weeks. Notwithstanding that, there were some interesting new products and features.

In the early days of the InfoComm conference and trade show, the Projector Shoot Out was a valuable exercise for assessing new video technologies back when the differences between brands and models could be significant. While the need for such an event no longer exists, it seemed like a great time to do my own shoot out, but this time between set top boxes that are used to bring off-air, ATSC 3.0/NextGen TV into a home.
