    You might say that, at one point, I became obsessed with flagpoles. Not any old flagpole, mind you. One in particular next to the Riverdale Monument that had decades of history behind it. And if someone didn’t do something about it soon, the flagpole itself would be history.

    I never really thought of myself as being the product of a large family until much later in life. When I was growing up, most knew only of my younger sister, Renee. Maybe an older brother or an older sister. But in reality, I have six brothers and sisters, which is hard to fathom — especially since I didn’t grow up with most of them. And we only have time to blame for that.

    All I had to do was pick up a package that had been left at the wrong door. I knocked. My neighbor let me in. Nothing felt out of the ordinary. But then it happened. It was like raindrops hitting a tin roof, but it wasn’t raining, and we weren’t under a tin roof. I followed the sound, and set my sights on something that hasn’t been in front of my eyes for at least a couple decades. It was a typewriter. An electric one, to be exact.
