Mike Farley, who won 273 games, six regional titles and four Class A state championships in his 20 seasons as Scarborough’s girls soccer coach, announced Tuesday that he is stepping down. Farley said in an email that he has an opportunity to coach in his son’s club program in Florida.

South Portland’s boys basketball team ultimately fell three points shy of a championship, but it was a bounce-back season nonetheless for the Red Riots. Who remain the gold standard in Class AA South. One season after being upset in its first playoff game, South Portland returned to the biggest stage, which has been a frequent occurrence under Kevin Millington.

ETHAN HOFFMAN, Senior – Indoor track• Class B state champion, shot put* WMC Field Senior Division MVP* WMC all-star, first-team, shot putHoffman cemented his status as the state’s premier shot put thrower and in the process, he elevated his teammates to greatness as well. Hoffman joined the Clippers team as a junior and came in third in the shot put. Hoffman, who also scored in outdoor track in the throws and sprints, had a terrific senior campaign indoors.

NATHAN HANISKO, Senior – HockeyDay-in, day-out, Hanisko faced the best that the opposition could give him and he always rose to the occasion, keeping the undermanned Capers competitive all winter. Hanisko, who also golfed in high school, played a supporting role in Cape Elizabeth’s run to the Class B state title in 2023, saving nearly 90 percent of the shots he faced and posting a goals-against-average of 1.94 in eight outings backing up Charlie Garvin.

ETHAN KELLER, Senior – Indoor track• SMAA All-Star, first-team, mile* SMAA All-Star, first-team, two-mile* SMAA All-Star, first-team, 4×800 relay* SMAA All-Star, second-team, senior 800* Class A state champion, mileKeller grew into a champion and as a result, he helped his team to the pinnacle as well. Keller first made his presence felt in indoor track as a sophomore, as he placed fourth in the two-mile at the Class A state meet where Scarborough finished first.

Boys’ teamDAVE ST. PIERRE – Cheverus/Yarmouth hockeyCheverus/Yarmouth’s co-op boys hockey team did it again. But it wasn’t easy. Last year’s state title was a breakthrough for the program, but repeating, after graduating some terrific players and leaders, posed an entirely different challenge. A challenge that Cheverus/Yarmouth was able to meet and with that repeat crown, Dave St. Pierre also repeats, as our Portland edition Coach of the Year, of a boys’ team.

OWEN DAWSON, Senior – Nordic skiing* WMC Nordic all-star* WMC All-AcademicDawson parlayed a new attitude about Nordic skiing into a triumphant campaign this winter, as he saved his best performances for last. Dawson made a leap up the standings as a junior, placing second to teammate Teo Steverlynck-Horne in the freestyle and fourth in the classic, helping the Falcons win the Class B team title.
