    A couple of things, like, oh, the future of America’s commitment to the notion of democracy, are on the Election Day ballot Nov. 5. That’s something of a reason, I would think, to make sure to vote. Four years ago, 66.8 percent of eligible American voters participated in the presidential election, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That leaves a lot of room for improvement.

    Last Tuesday, as has been the practice now for the last 36 years, the men who erect buildings gathered in Bridgeport to remember the 28 workers, a boy among them, who died on April 23 1987 when L’Ambiance Plaza, the apartment towers the doomed workers were erecting, crashed down on them. Each year, of course, the number of people who survived the accident or who lived through it in one way or another dwindles with the passage of time.

    And once again, as predictable as the rising of the Harvest Moon, absentee ballots clog the court system like leaves in your gutter. This time they are the detritus of a Democratic mayoral primary between incumbent Joe Ganim and challenger, one-time Gamim appointee, John Gomes. Though they may have refined the ritual of the harvest, this crop of Bridgeport Democrats did not invent it. Not by a long shot.
