When you're in a plane thirty thousand feet over an ocean,the one thing you really don't want to smell is smoke. It was June of 2019, and my husband Michael and I were on our way to Switzerland, our latest destination since we became digital nomads in 2017. But thirty minutes into our flight from New York to London, with nothing but the Atlantic Ocean stretching out under us as far as the eye could see, I definitely smelled smoke inside the cabin of our plane. "Huh," Michael said casually.

All my life, I’ve been told what a drag it is getting old. And, it’s true, I really don’t want to die — that part of getting older does suck. I’m also not so crazy about the declining-health thing. To be very clear, I’m definitely anti-cancer. But I’m in my late 50s, and now that I’m getting older myself, the more I realize that I wasn’t told the whole truth about aging. Because, for me, some aspects of it have been absolutely awesome. This is, hands-down, the best time of my life.
We Knew a Turkish Breakfast Was Big

My Favorite Food is Vietnamese Spring Rolls

For as long as I can remember, my favorite food has been gỏi cuốn, known outside of Vietnam as Vietnamese salad rolls, summer rolls, or fresh spring rolls. Unlike Chinese spring rolls, Vietnamese spring rolls are served fresh, not deep-fried. They're made with rice vermicelli noodles; roasted pork belly and boiled shrimp; vegetables including lettuce, shredded carrots, and/or bean sprouts; and herbs including cilantro, basil, lemongrass, chives, and/or mint.

At this point, there is little understanding of the shooter’s motives and it would be irresponsible to rush to judgement. There is evidence the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, had given $15 when he was 17 to a group that raises funds for Democratic party causes. When he turned 18 he registered as a Republican.

Here’s a sample of some of the online comments we’ve received when people learn Brent and I are digital nomads. We’ve lived for months at a time in Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey, and the Republic of Georgia — all countries that treat their LGBTQ+ residents either fairly badly or very badly. Hey guys, what is it like living in such homophobic countries? Aren’t you afraid? Don’t you know how Georgia treats queer people?
