The bloody escapades of Jason in the Friday the 13th series, the domestic horror of The Shining, the uncanny tension of Rosemary's Baby; who even knows what horror would feel like without them? Still, the movie industry is nothing but turbulent, and just because an idea is amazing doesn't mean it will happen.

It's not hyperbole to claim that many of the greatest games of all time are sequels. Half-Life 2, Baldur's Gate 3, Mass Effect 2, Portal 2 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are but a few examples of this in practice. They all expanded on their predecessors in exciting ways, garnering critical acclaim and allowing their respective studios to skip happily all the way to the bank. That last point is no surprise, given that sequels are often massively profitable.

There are many reasons why a feature might be deleted from a video game. "Stormy Ascent," for example, was an infamous Crash Bandicoot level that was cut for being too hard. There were also multiple Colossi who were cut from Shadow of the Colossus for pacing reasons. Hell, the game Goldeneye scrapped plans to feature every Bond due to fears that Sean Connery would sue them - yes, really.

If there's one genre of gaming that understands the importance of choice, it's role-playing games. Many amazing RPGs know that seeing the world and your character change based on your decisions is an important part of the formula. As such, you'd be hard-pressed to find major RPG outcomes that haven't been chosen a fair few times.

There's a harsh and devastating truth to the modern gaming landscape, that being that a new video game bomb seems to wait around every corner. Sure, plenty of games find runaway success, like the recently released Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 or Blue Prince, but for every awesome triumph, there are a handful of flops. As Triple-A gaming budgets rise, so too does the pressure for every release to sell well, with many growing to be all-or-nothing.
