The word “faith” appears approximately 250 times in the New Testament. But that word is a noun, and when you include the verb expressions of that word, there are far more. These would be words like “trust” and “believe.” Based on the number of mentions alone you’d have to include that “faith” is an important concept in the Bible. And of course that’s true. As Christians, we are people of faith. Faith is not an ancillary part of our lives but rather the driving force behind everything we do.

Augustine, the great North African theologian of the fourth century, once wrote this:“Love God, and do whatever you please.”Was he right? Maybe there’s part of you, like me, that bristles at that statement. And maybe that bristling comes from the fact that we know ourselves a little too well to fully endorse what the great theologian is saying. We know, for example, that there are many times throughout the day when we want the wrong thing - we want to be angry. Or lustful. Or greedy.

How are you feeling today? Did you wake up ready to go? Beat the alarm clock: Bounce out of bed with hope and optimism for the day? Or was it something different? There are days for all of us that just feel … weary. It’s when the action items for the day are too many to count. It’s when the burdens of friends and family weigh you down. It’s when you look at all that has to be done and you feel a near-crushing sense of anxiety. On those days, you want nothing more than for the day to not start at all.

If you go to your refrigerator right now, chances are you will find at least one bottle of something that has two important words on it. The words are “Shake well.” Have you ever tried to use whatever that thing is without shaking it well? What comes out is a watered down, liquidy version of the real thing. But when you shake it well, you stir up all the things that have the tendency to settle down at the bottom.

We should not be afraid to pray big prayers. There are lots of them in the Bible:Joshua prayed that the sun would stand still in the sky (Josh. 10:12–14). Elijah prayed for fire from heaven and then rain to end a severe drought (1 Kings 18). Nehemiah prayed for the heart of a pagan king to be moved (Neh. 1:10–12). Sometimes we don’t pray big prayers because we have been disappointed in the answers to our previous prayers and we don’t want to feel that disappointment again.

Being a child of God brings incredible privileges. But we should be careful not to mistake the intimacy we have as His children with frivolity. Read more in today’s post here: https://t.co/j7j7hhjdQQ

Christians, if God is your Father, then you should expect him to discipline you. While that may not be comfortable, it’s very good news. Today’s post is about why. Read more here: https://t.co/8bLidKEfn2
