    In the late 1960s, protests at San Francisco State and UC Berkeley helped usher in ethnic studies and a mandate for more Black faculty members. But before the void got filled, a white Jewish professor stepped in to teach a course in Black Literature—to a class of majority Black students. In 1970, as a young, new ABD (all but dissertation) English professor at San Francisco State, I was asked by the department’s then chair and vice chair to teach a course in Black literature.

    The Last DekrepitzerBy Howard LangerCresheim Press, 262 pp. I confess the first thing that grabbed me about Howard Langer’s debut novel was the homophone “decrepit” embedded in the title. The Dekrepitzers, it turns out, are a fictional Hasidic sect wiped out by the Nazis, except for their dynastic lone survivor Rebbe Shmuel Meir Lichtbencher, the novel’s protagonist, who is captured by the Russians and forced to serve in the Russian army for three years.
