The year 2018 has already been distinguished by a bonanza of books about motherhood: smart books, whimsical books, anxious books, frightening books, eloquent books — bringing both heat and light to that most fundamental subject. In this, as in so many things, men seem to be lagging. There is no parallel harvest of thoughtful assessments of fatherhood in evidence, and the three books at hand are a tentative start, at best. Let’s step it up, dads.

Prairie, Dresses, Art, Other, by Danielle Dutton. A potent, wildly hybrid book that is by turns fiction, memoir, and art criticism. Since autofiction and autotheory are the signature prose modes of our time, Dutton's book could be conceived of as the logical next turn of the screw by folding in an extra layer of hybridity. (In other words: autofiction = fiction + memoir / autotheory = theory + memoir / Dutton = fiction and theory + memoir).

Reading Log, Winter 2023–24American Visions: The United States 1800–1860, by Edward L. Ayers. Very solid, although not transcendent, work from this eminent historian. Ayers traces the diverse voices that shaped American self-understanding in the period leading up to the Civil War. My sense is that he is a progressive-minded Southerner who is bent on destroying whatever extant remnants of the Lost Cause mythos are still polluting the discourse.
