HALIFAX - A vice-principal stabbed by a 15-year-old student inside a Halifax high school is suing a school security guard, claiming the guard failed to follow proper search and de-escalation procedures before the attack. In a statement of claim filed April 28, vice-principal Wayne Rodgers alleges that on March 20, 2023, Ryan Cosgrove failed to complete a search of the student and his belongings after the security guard pulled a weapon from the student's school bag.

HALIFAX - The murder trial for a Halifax-area youth accused of participating in the killing of a 16-year-old student last year heard Tuesday from an eyewitness to the fatal stabbing. The 17-year-old accused pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder following the death on April 22 of Ahmad Maher Al Marrach, who was pronounced dead in hospital after he was found badly injured near the Halifax Shopping Centre.

HALIFAX - Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston led the Progressive Conservatives to a decisive majority win Tuesday, bucking a trend in recent provincial elections that saw incumbents roughed up by the electorate or soundly defeated. As the returns rolled in, the Tories were leading or elected in 42 of the legislature's 55 ridings, the New Democrats were at nine, the Liberals had three and there was one Independent.

HALIFAX - The Nova Scotia Liberal party is sounding the alarm over Elections Nova Scotia's decision Thursday not to mail voter information cards ahead of the Nov. 26 provincial election because of a possible postal strike. The party, which is trying to unseat the Progressive Conservatives, issued a statement saying the move is "unconscionable" because it will leave many voters without access to critically important information about where and when they can vote on election day.
