By The Finnish explosives firm Forcit says it will spend more than $200 million to build a plant in Pori, Finland, for 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), an explosive used in military applications. Forcit says European production capacity for TNT is limited. "Investing in Finland is an investment in increasing the safety and security of not only Finland but also Europe as a whole," Forcit CEO Joakim Westerlund says in a statement.
Ecovyst and ChiralVision team up for enzyme immobilization

By The US catalyst firm Ecovyst will work with the Dutch biocatalysis specialist ChiralVision to advance enzyme mobilization technologies. The firms say they will combine Ecovyst's strength in silicas with ChiralVision's functionalization and immobilization know-how to improve enzyme-based biocatalytic processes. In 2023, ChiralVision signed an agreement focused on polymers for enzyme immobilization with the Chinese ion-exchange resin maker Sunresin.
Oxyle raises $16 million for PFAS destruction

The scientists Fajer Mushtaq and Silvan Staufert founded Oxyle in 2020 while they were at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich. In the firm's process, PFAS adsorbs on a nanoporous piezoelectric catalyst, which is then activated to create transient surface charges.

The specialty chemical maker Ingevity says it is exploring strategic alternatives for its industrial specialties business, including most of its pine-derived chemicals. Last year, Ingevity announced the closure of pine chemical plants in Arkansas and Louisiana; the company now says it is reviewing the fate of portions of a pine chemical plant in South Carolina.
Ashland to sell sclareolide fixative business

By Ashland has agreed to sell its sclareolide business to the French firm Mane for an undisclosed sum. Ashland produces sclareolide from sclareol, which it extracts from clary sage plants grown in North Carolina. Companies like Mane turn sclareolide into ambroxide, a fixative chemical used in fine fragrances. Ashland acquired the fixative business as part of its ill-fated 2017 purchase of Pharmachem Laboratories and says the sale will complete its divestment of all former Pharmachem businesses.
Olin to enter polyvinyl chloride business

Olin executives disclosed at a recent investor conference that the company intends to enter the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) business. Olin already produces vinyl chloride and ethylene dichloride (EDC), two key PVC raw materials, and says the US is the least expensive place to make PVC because of low-cost shale gas. The company says its options include forming partnerships with existing PVC producers, entering the field through acquisition, and building its own PVC plant on the US Gulf Coast.
Chlorine investments proliferate in US

Multiple companies are making investments in the US with the same goal in mind: lowering costs while reducing the shipment of chlorine, a poisonous gas. Chlorum Solutions USA, a newcomer to the country's chemical production, says it will spend more than $70 million to build a plant in Casa Grande, Arizona, that converts salt directly into sodium hypochlorite (bleach), hydrochloric acid, and caustic soda.
