    Jenny Randerson, Lady Randerson, who has died aged 76, was a Liberal and then Liberal Democrat politician who spent 28 years in a succession of elected posts in Wales, followed by 14 years as a life peer, including three years, 2012-15, as a junior minister in the Wales Office in the 2010 Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government.

    So the first chart announcement since Love is Enough,  the song by young carers featuring Ed Davey was released is out. It would melt even the most permafrosted heart. And they’re at……Number 6!Which isn’t bad for a day’s sales. As we said before, it is pretty decent. But when you’ve got the person who produced Cher’s Believe running the show, then you’re probably on to a winner. Ed was pretty chuffed with this news, paying tribute to the young carers who wrote and performed the song.

    As a co-presenter of The Computer Programme on BBC television in 1982, Chris Serle did more than point to what the machines could do. The Everyman figure to Ian McNaught-Davis’s Expert, he was the unsure yet unflappable representative of those faced with this new technology, showing that it could not only be mastered but that there was nothing to be scared about. Countless young people went into computing as a result, myself included.

    My friend and former colleague Trevor Wilson, who has died aged 96, was a Liberal party politician in Yorkshire from the early 1960s to the mid-80s. A solid, non-conformist Yorkshire businessman, Trevor was elected to represent the woollen town of Elland on West Riding county council in 1963, in a byelection caused by his father’s death.

    For six months before the general election of 2010, Andrew Stunell, Lord Stunell, who has died aged 81, was one of the Liberal Democrat MPs preparing for a possible hung parliament. When that result came about he was appointed by the party’s leader, Nick Clegg, to its team negotiating for a coalition with David Cameron’s Conservatives, together with David Laws, Danny Alexander and Chris Huhne.
