    Versatile and always reliable, actor Clive Revill, who has died aged 94, moved easily between stage and screen, appearing with the Royal Shakespeare Company, in the West End and on Broadway, and in countless television shows and films, notably providing Emperor Palpatine’s voice in the original edition of The Empire Strikes Back.

    One of the most respected theatre critics of his generation, Michael Ratcliffe brought to the role an informed hinterland steeped in poetry and novels, having notably served as literary editor of the Times. His influence on theatre criticism was all the more remarkable for being so short-lived; a five-year spell with the Observer from 1984. He saw his role from his vantage point in the stalls, as he told The Stage in 1986, as offering “a sense of perspective” on what he had witnessed on stage.

    A widely respected arts administrator, Graham Marchant served in formative roles in theatre, opera and dance, as well as holding senior positions with the Arts Council of Great Britain and its successor, Arts Council England. Marchant was, he said, driven by a “fascination for performance” and proved as sensitive to artists and staff as he was to issues of management during the testing years of the Thatcher government, when arts funding was increasingly politicised and parlously reduced.

Born in Oldham, after reading English at the University of Cambridge he seemed destined to follow his father into Lancashire’s then still thriving cotton industry, beginning his working career as a yarn tester.
