KING CITY — King City High wrestling team won two dual meets in the Mission Division last Thursday night at Greenfield High School. The Mustangs routed the Carmel Padres 72-12 and beat Everett Alvarez 47-35 in a come-from-behind win. “Standouts of the day included Armando Villasenor (175 pounds) and Ivan Paramo (157 pounds),” said King City head coach Miguel Zendejas. “They came up with a couple of wins by pin.

GONZALES — Gonzales High School wrestlers Clarissa Rico and Cherish Yebra won medals at the Trojan Wrath Girls Wrestling Tournament that took place at Alisal High School on Dec. 28. Rico went 3-1 to win the consolation championship. Yebra finished with a 3-2 record to place fourth. At the Pat Lovell Classic in Aptos on Dec. 27-28, Josiah Rosales-Garcia went 3-3 to place eighth for the Spartan boys. Nelson Cisneros did not place but finished with a 3-2 record.

KING CITY — King City High’s cross country teams celebrated the completion of their running season with a dinner and awards night at the school cafeteria. Runners, coaches and parents attended the Christmas-themed event in semi-formal attire. “We had tacos for our dinner and we celebrated our seniors there, as it is kind of hard to celebrate them during the season,” said King City head cross country coach Miguel Zendejas.

SALINAS VALLEY — King City High varsity girls’ basketball team lost 60-27 at home to the Watsonville Wildcatz on Nov. 26. Watsonville held a 28-16 halftime lead then pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring King City 16-6. Kendyl Burpo led the Lady Mustangs with eight points, while Crystal Paramo and Mikayla McLane scored five points apiece. Amity Hearne had a team-high 14 rebounds.

SALINAS VALLEY — Gonzales High varsity boys’ soccer team opened the pre-season last week with a 4-1 victory over host Pacific Grove, and ended the week on Saturday with a 2-2 tie in Santa Maria against Righetti High School. On Nov. 25 at Pacific Grove, Jorge Uribe scored two goals in the Spartans’ win over the Breakers. Edgar Santiago and Luis Benavides scored solo goals, and Jose Camacho and Ulisses Mancillas were credited with assists.

SALINAS VALLEY — High school distance aces Giovanni Ochoa of Gonzales and Fabian Serrano of Greenfield placed fourth and ninth, respectively, at the Central Coast Section (CCS) cross country championships to qualify for the State Meet. Ochoa ran in the Division IV boys race and finished in a personal record of 15:53 on the Crystal Springs Course in Belmont. He received an All-CCS medal for placing in the top seven and earned his third trip to State.

KING CITY — King City Mustangs ended the football season with a 21-0 win over the Soledad Aztecs on Friday night at War Memorial Stadium. Soledad needed to win to keep their Central Coast Section at-large chances alive, but the Mustangs secured the victory with two late scores in the last few minutes of the contest. “Very proud of the way the boys finished the season,” said King City head coach Mac Villanueva.

Watsonville High senior Katelynn Ruiz was trailing the lead runner during last week’s Pacific Coast Athletic League Cross Country Championships until she reached the second hill at Palo Corona Park. That’s when she saw a chance to pick up her pace and outrun the rest of the field. “I saw that an opponent had slowed up and stopped to tie her shoe,” Ruiz said.

SALINAS VALLEY — Local high school runners and flag football players will be competing this week with championship hopes for cross country, and the chance to play in a season-ending tournament for flag football. FLAG FOOTBALLThe 10 teams that competed in the PCAL will be competing in the end-of-season flag football tournament that began on Monday. South Monterey County will be represented by the King City Lady Mustangs that were seeded third in the tournament.

SAN ARDO — At a boxing show on Saturday at the Rock Boxing Gym in Salinas, three boxers from the San Ardo Boxing Club came home with unanimous decisions. Grettel Cruz, 16, won her match in the 101-pound weight class; Miguel Hernandez, 15, won in the 98-pound weight class; and Bryan Cruz, 15, claimed the 95-pound weight class. Next, three boxers from the King City Boxing Club and two from the San Ardo Boxing Club will box in a show at Hanford this weekend.
