In January 2024, the Cedar Falls indie pop trio Salt Fox found themselves heading to Texas for a gig. Right before departing, Kyle, a friend of a friend that the band had never met, showed up to be the roadie for the trip and became the inspiration for the title of the band’s new album. “Over the course of the week long trip, Kyle laid out the most beautiful framework of friendship, loyalty, happiness and never-ending optimism,” the band explained in an email.

In April 2023, Dick Prall brought a string quartet to CSPS Hall in Cedar Rapids. Billed as Dickie and the Cask Strength Quartet, the evening was a setlist of stringed versions of songs from Prall’s career to that point. Towards the end of the evening, he announced that he wanted to try out some new songs. One of them was “Shakes You.”“Shakes You” is the opening track on Dickie’s new EP Headful of Hiss, which released on Nov. 29.

Dichte Bäume beschatten die Uferwege des Fennsees in Wilmersdorf. Inmitten der Stadt bieten sie den zahlreichen Spaziergängern einen ruhigen Aufenthaltsort. Doch seit Jahren geht gerade in der warmen Jahreszeit vom östlichen Teil des Sees ein fürchterlicher Gestank aus. Grund dafür sind Faulgase, die durch Zersetzungsprozesse innerhalb des Gewässers entstehen. „Entstanden“ müsste es eigentlich heißen, denn im zurückliegenden Sommer blieb die Luft an dem Gewässer erstmals rein.

Most of the press around Des Moines band Munk Rivers mentions their self-declared genre “yearncore.” While obviously somewhat tongue-in-cheek, it speaks to the very human emotions that weave through the lyrics of lead singer and frontperson Charlotte Judkins. Siblings Charlotte and Tucker Judkins started performing as Munk Rivers last summer after they relocated to Des Moines from Webster City.

In a recent email from Chris Bernat, guitarist and vocalist for Quad Cities band Chrash, said, “We are all very pleased with the cover shot featuring a big shiner on my right eye.”The week the band was scheduled to do the photoshoot for the album artwork for their latest album, Bernat had a pretty bad bicycle accident.

Joel Sires slides into my DMs, “You gotta check this band out. Run Dog from CF. Unreal. So fully realized.” High praise from someone I consider to be one of Eastern Iowa’s great songwriters. I wasted no time checking out the quartet, who released their debut four-song EP The Big Room in February. They’ve garnered their fair share of chatter following some impressive showcases at The Octopus in Cedar Falls.

The symphony evolved from the Italian opera overture called the sinfonia. The earliest concert-symphonies were written in the 1730’s and 1740’s and exhibit the same formal traits as the opera sinfonias written at the same time. Both consisted of three movements in contrasting tempi: fast-slow-fast. Occasionally a minuet was substituted for the last movement and aby 1765 or 1770 the minuet became the third movement of the then standard four-movement plan: fast-slow-minuet-fast.

Eva und Cosima – zwei Stadtteilkinos, getrennt durch die Bezirksgrenze zwischen Wilmersdorf und Friedenau, vereint durch Karlheinz Opitz, der – zusätzlich zu den Eva-Lichtspielen – 2022 das Cosima-Filmtheater übernommen, saniert und im Juli diesen Jahres wieder eröffnet hat. Im folgenden werden er und seine beiden Kinos vorgestellt, und ein Kinofan aus der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit wird auch zu Wort kommen.
