OLATHE, Kan. — A little over a month after the season high school folkstyle season ended, the freestyle wrestling season is underway. The first big freestyle event in the Kansas City metro, the Black and Blue Freestyle Tournament, took place last Saturday at Olathe West High School and it mostly featured Elementary, middle school and high school wrestlers from Kansas Missouri and a handful of wrestlers from other states in the Midwest.

The loaded 2025 senior class for the Staley wrestling team got one last hurrah Tuesday. This season, the Falcons had 16 seniors on the team, with 11 of them being in the lineup and five earned a state medal. Five Falcons also were selected to be a part of Team Missouri in the annual Metro Classic at Avila University. The Metro Classic is an event that features some of the best senior high school wrestlers in the Kansas City Metro area on the Kansas and Missouri side.

COLUMBIA — The Liberty boys wrestling team is on an incredible run. The Blue Jays have now tied Whitfield, Oak Park and Maplewood-Richmond Heights for the second longest streak of winning consecutive state championships with six as they ran away with first place with 187 points in Saturday’s Class 4 Missouri State High School Wrestling Championships Saturday at Mizzou Arena. Ritenour has the most consecutive state championships with 14 from 1948 to 1961. “It’s been amazing,” Westpfahl said.

COLUMBIA — Last season, the Nixa girls wrestling team just missed out on its first state championship. The Eagles were just .5 points behind Francis Howell Central in the team score in last year’s Class 2 Missouri State High School Wrestling Championships as they finished in second. This season, Nixa left no doubt on which team was going to win the team state title. It ran away with first place, scoring 139.5 points to win the first team title in program history.

COLUMBIA – The Liberty boys wrestling team looks like its well on its way to a sixth straight state title. The Blue Jays have a comfortable lead after day one of the Missouri State High School Wrestling Championships Friday at Mizzou Arena as they are in first place with 90.5 points. Columbia Hickman is in second place with 74 points, Neosho is third with 73.5 and Lafayette Wildwood is fourth with 66. Staley is outside the top four as it is in fifth with 62 points.
