Last week, Kansas politics was rocked by scandal. Policymakers must respond with carefully-crafted policy change, not knee-jerk reactions that could derail the efforts of Kansans working to rebuild their lives. The late Jonathan Clayton’s truck and body were found on Sunday, Aug. 25, apparently having left the road and hit a tree several days earlier.

“Are you better off than you were four years ago?”• Ronald ReaganIt is no secret that President Biden is unpopular. In the 2023 Kansas Speaks poll, a whopping 62.8% of respondents were dissatisfied with Biden’s performance, versus 32.9% who were dissatisfied with fellow Democrat Gov. Laura Kelly. Widespread approval of Biden’s withdrawal is one of the few issues these days that bring Democrats, Republicans and independents together.

Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump is rushed offstage by Secret Service agents after being grazed by a bullet during a campaign rally on Saturday, July 13, 2024, in Butler, Pennsylvania. (Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images/TNS) TNS I doubt that Thomas Crooks shot up a Trump rally in Butler, Penn., because he had heard Democrats say the former president would destroy our democracy. Ditto the notion that Trump himself inspired the young man with his violent MAGA rhetoric.

At the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, an American long jumper named Bob Beamon uncorked a performance for the ages. He jumped 29 feet, 2½ inches, nearly two feet farther than any human ever had. Beamon's feat set a world record that stood until 1991, but the shock of witnessing it is what people remember. We don't often see a sport's evolution skip a generation in one afternoon. The record Beamon broke by 22 inches 56 years ago has advanced exactly two inches since.

A month ago, I editorialized about the recent defeat of a proposed sales tax extension for the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals stadiums in Jackson County, Missouri. Led by a group called KC Tenants, the “no” vote secured a 58% majority. Their message was why subsidize venues for billionaire-owned, for-profit sports teams when Kansas Citians cannot find affordable housing? The message resonates on both sides of the state line. However, it did not resonate with the Kansas Legislature.

Kansas policymakers are abuzz about the recent defeat of a sports stadium tax in Jackson County, Missouri. Unfortunately, they’re saying all the wrong things. To paraphrase James Carville, “it’s affordable housing, stupid.”If the tax had been approved, the money would have gone to renovate Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Super Bowl-winning Chiefs. The three eights cent sales tax extension would also have partially financed a new, downtown stadium for the Royals.
