Ryan Charles’ time at Bishop’s Stortford has come to an end after he completed a move to Aveley. The popular forward, nicknamed Spider, will join up with former Blues Ryan Henshaw and Ollie Peters at the Pitching In Isthmian League, Premier Division club. Charles, who was a member of Stortford’s Isthmian Premier title-winning side in 2022-23, scored 42 goals in 211 appearances. He also made his international debut last season after featuring for Saint Lucia in the CONCACAF Nations League.

Ashley Sutton goes into the mid-season break with a 10-point lead at the top of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship after securing his fourth race win of the season on Sunday (June 22). The Bishop’s Stortford driver took the honours in the second race at Oulton Park before being runner-up in the third and final event.

A Savile Row tailor and the founder of a publishing company have been named finalists in the 2025 Allica Bank Great British Entrepreneur Awards. Alexandra Wood and Stuart Debar, who are both based in Bishop’s Stortford, are two of more than 800 people from across the country in the running to triumph at what are dubbed the Grammys of Entrepreneurship.

A Bishop’s Stortford law firm raised nearly £3,000 by participating in an annual charity will-writing campaign. Lever & Co, which is based at White Horse Court, off North Street, has been supporting Will Aid since 2011. Instead of charging its usual fees for traditional wills, the company’s staff donate their time to complete wills for clients, who in turn make a donation to Will Aid to help fund vital charity work in the UK and across the world.

A home care business franchisee raised over £500 for charity by running the Edinburgh Half Marathon. Ian Thompson, the managing director at Walfinch Welwyn & Bishop’s Stortford, set a personal best by crossing the finish line in 3hr 33min. He took on the challenge in the Scottish capital to raise funds for the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS).

Luke Dunham smashed his personal best to record the fastest 3,000m time run by a first-year under-20 in the UK. He took a huge 18 seconds off his previous best to cross the line in 8min 0.80sec at the British Milers Club race in London on Wednesday June 18. As well as setting the new standard for a first-year under-20 (age 17), the Bishop’s Stortford High School student is now the fastest under-20 in the UK this year and the second fastest in Europe.

Bishop’s Stortford will start the 2025-26 National 1 season with a home match against Birmingham Moseley on Saturday September 6. Tom Coleman’s side will also welcome Plymouth Albion to Silver Leys in the first month of the season, on September 20, in between away trips to Blackheath and Rotherham Titans on September 13 and 27 respectively. Their first match with one of the three newly-promoted teams comes on October 18 when they will entertain 2 North champions Leeds Tykes.

There were gutsy performances and moments of brilliance when Thorley Manor teams took part in the annual Bishop’s Stortford Community Football Club tournament. The under-eights netted some outstanding goals as they reached the quarter-finals of their competition. They showed plenty of flair and enthusiasm, with their efforts setting the tone for the rest of the club’s sides. Three under-nine teams were in action for Thorley - Blacks, Whites and Oranges - and all of them made impressive progress.

A women-only gym and wellness hub in Bishop’s Stortford has triumphed at the Health and Wellbeing Awards. AbFabFit Club, based in Raynham Road, scooped the Best Customer Experience title after impressing the Business Awards UK judges. AbFab is owned by husband-and-wife duo Mark and Jaine Alderson. Jaine started the business in Epping in 2018 before opening another branch in Waltham Abbey two years later. The Stortford hub opened in September 2021 and they now have in excess of 300 members.

A double Premiership champion has rejoined Bishop’s Stortford as their new forwards’ coach. Tom Woolstencroft, who played at hooker and won English rugby’s top flight with Saracens in 2019 and 2023, will be part of head coach Tom Coleman’s backroom staff in National 1. The former Stortford youth player, who had other spells with the likes of Bath, Wasps and London Irish, also featured in some of Saracens’ matches during their successful European Champions Cup campaign in 2019.
