Peoria, Illinois was a hub for distilling in the state and the Woolner brothers were a large part of the industry. The Woolner brothers came to America from Hungary and purchased the Grove Distillery in the mid-1870s, from Richard Gregg. The brothers, Adolph, Samuel and Ignatius were soon joined by their other brothers, Jacob and Morris. They incorporated the company by 1850. The company became part of the Whiskey Trust and Adolph Woolner was vice-president of the Trust until his death in 1891.

This is the latest expression from the 15 Stars brand. This producer takes nine and fifteen year old Bourbons and finishes them in Tawny, white and ruby port barrels. It makes for a fruity whiskey that would taste very good in a Manhattan Cocktail. They sent me a bottle for review the other day and Matt and I sat down and tasted it. Here are our tasting notes. Proof: 105Age: Nine Years OldNose:Mike: Vanilla, raisins, apricots, baking spices and oak wood.

The Maker’s Mark Wood Finishing Series always produces excellent whiskey. This latest release, The Keeper’s Release, is Maker’s Mark Bourbon finished with ten virgin toasted American white oak staves. It is an excellent whiskey that tastes very similar to the Cellar Aged release that came out last year. I recently received a bottle from the distillery for review and Matt and I sat down and tasted it. Here are our tasting notes.

Hard Times are nothing new in history. The prime example of this is the panic of 1877. The Presidential election caused economic turmoil in the United States. The Democratic candidate, Samuel J. Tilden, won the popular vote, while the Republican candidate, Rutherford B. Hayes won the Electoral College. This caused mass protests in the south and civil war was threatened to break out again. It was settled by recognizing Hayes’ win with the promise of ending reconstruction.
