Washington State Parks officials are eyeing a pair of options for the future of their largest state park. The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission announced Friday that it is considering two proposals as part of the 20-year master plan for Mount Spokane State Park. One is dubbed "Community Mountain," which focuses on improving and maintaining existing facilities and trails at the 12,444-acre park in the southern Selkirk Mountains.

Your first walleye shouldn’t be huge. That’s not to say it should be small. It should put up a decent fight and be worth taking home. It just shouldn’t be big enough to inspire unreasonable expectations. You should probably also catch it when you’re young, in those blissful years before you understand the inner workings of a mortgage. My first walleye broke both of these rules. I caught it on Long Lake on a recent Wednesday as a 32-year-old with a general understanding of amortization schedules.

Bill Baker has a mystery on his hands. The supply of kokanee salmon in Loon Lake has crashed in recent years, turning the popular fishery north of Spokane into a bit of a disappointment. Instead of finding large numbers of landlocked salmon in the 10- to 12-inch range, anglers are finding small numbers of really big fish - a sign that some entire age classes of kokes have disappeared.
