Way back in 2004, the author and critic Matthew Cheney wrote, “If Kelly Link isn’t the best short story writer in the US, then she’s the equal of whoever is,” a judgment with which I agreed then and have agreed ever since. For years, I’ve guided readers to Magic for Beginners (2005), Link’s second collection and winner of the Locus Award, as, if not her best, then at least the one I hold dearest.
