Our television columnist Michel Ghanem, a.k.a. @tvscholar, watches over 160 seasons of television each year, and he is here for you. We originally published this recommendation of The Last of Us on February 6, 2023, shortly after the show’s first season premiered. We’re recirculating it now that the series has returned to HBO with a bigger audience for its second season, premiering April 13, 2025. We get it: There’s an overwhelming amount of television right now. The streaming landscape is an impractical maze, and the good stuff easily gets lost in the shuffle.

Spoilers for The Pitt season 1 ahead. Before I knew it, everyone around me had hopped aboard The Pitt train. The medical drama has picked up steam over the last fifteen weeks, giving Netflix a run for its money on the advantages of a weekly television show that builds momentum through word-of-mouth appeal (and peer pressure). It may be the biggest medical drama since the early days of Grey’s Anatomy—and it’s a lot more realistic, too.
