INTRODUCTION Root system architecture (RSA) is an important determinant for the ability of plants to explore the soil for water and nutrients. It also provides mechanical support for the aerial plant parts. Several traits, including total root length and biomass as well as the number, density, and angles of secondary roots are key to shape the RSA and, as such, have been studied across species (LaRue et al., 2022; Maqbool et al., 2022; Satbhai et al., 2015).
