August’s full moon is coming up Monday, but this one is extra special because it’s a Blue Supermoon. The blue part doesn’t mean color, it’s all about numbers in a season. According to Space.com, this refers to the traditional term of blue moon, which refers to the third full moon in a season that has four full moons. Last August, there was also a blue moon, but that was because it was the second full moon in the calendar month. That version stems from this seasonal definition.

The well known summertime meteor shower is back! The Perseids will peak this weekend and the weather looks like it will cooperate nicely. The shower pops up every year from late July through Sept. 1, when the Earth travels through the debris field left from comet Swift-Tuttle. It burned up in our atmosphere, like most meteors normally do. So how rare is this exactly? According to NASA, the Earth gets hit a lot.

Warm summer nights can be good for stargazing. This time of year, the Big and Little dippers are easy to spot in the evening sky after dark. You can tell it’s summer by their position in the early evening sky. Right about now, they look like they are hanging high in the north/northwest sky vertically and facing each other. The Big and Little dippers aren’t constellations, but asterisms. Both of them are groups of stars that are pieces of other constellations in the night sky.
