Mike Sullivan always says it’s a player’s game, but the Penguins don’t capture back-to-back championships in 2016 and ’17 without a coach of his caliber leading the way. He became the winningest coach in franchise history over his remarkable tenure, which came to an end on Monday. But as Kyle Dubas said, beyond the success on the bench and what it led to on the ice for the city of Pittsburgh and the fanbase is the mark he’s made on the people here.

April 28, 2025 After it was announced that the Penguins and Head Coach Mike Sullivan have agreed to part ways, Kyle Dubas said it was not a decision that was taken lightly. “But as we continue to navigate the Penguins through this transitional period, we felt it was the best course forward for all involved,” Dubas said.

Evgeni Malkin always says Pittsburgh is his second hometown. So, when he re-signed with the Penguins in the summer of 2022, he wanted to give back to the community. RHMC provides families who travel for their children's medical care a place to call home. “It’s very important for me. I play here 19 years,” said Malkin, who will turn 39 this summer.

While the Penguins finished short of making the playoffs by a wider margin than they did in the previous two seasons, Kyle Dubas feels better now than he did previously. “Maybe we had less points than we had last year, but I feel like we're slightly better positioned as we move ahead because of the younger players here,” Pittsburgh’s President of Hockey Operations and GM said during his season-ending media availability on Monday (April 21).
