The Trump administration has designated a coalition of Haitian gangs that have embroiled the Caribbean nation in mass violence as terrorist organizations, a White House official confirmed to NBC News. The Viv Ansanm coalition and the Gran Grif gang will now be labeled a Foreign Terrorist Organizations and as Specifically Designated Global Terrorists by the State Department. The designation was first reported by the Miami Herald.

Several artifacts are being removed from the National Museum of African American History and Culture, according to the owners of the artifacts. The removals come after the Trump administration issued an executive order to remove certain pieces of history from the Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C., one of which is the NMAAHC.

The proposal had come after wide-ranging studies found an association between some of the ingredients in hair-smoothing and hair-straightening products, which are used mostly by Black women, and cancer. It is unclear why the FDA has not released its proposed ban.

A transitional council tasked with choosing Haiti’s next prime minister and Cabinet has been formally established, as gangs continue to tighten their grip on the troubled Caribbean country. The existence of the council, announced in a decree published Friday in a Haitian government outlet, was expected to trigger the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who promised to step down once the council was created. Henry did not immediately issue a comment following the publication of the decree.
