Sunshine may mix with heavy clouds for the holiday weekend in North Carolina. Mother's Day is Sunday on May 11 with lots of events planned around the Piedmont Triad. While Triad moms may want to keep a light sweatshirt around for cooler evening conditions, it looks safe to leave umbrellas at home on Saturday. Sunday's rain chances will be around 20% or less with the current storm tracks.

Sunday's weather in North Carolina and southern Virginia may start with some predawn rain and severe storms, followed by patchy dense fog around sunrise. By midday, clouds should continue clearing, allowing for a mostly sunny afternoon. However, the cold front that is slowly moving into North Carolina and may still trigger isolated severe storms for the eastern Piedmont Triad during the late afternoon.

The rain over the Piedmont Triad may be heavy at times with widespread scattered storms for the overnight hours until predawn on Sunday. A cold front on Sunday may bring the eastern Triad a marginal risk of isolated severe storms Sunday afternoon. Most areas in the Foothills and Triad should begin to see sunshine through midday. The weather may remain unsettled along the Blue Ridge Parkway with showers and isolated storms possible Sunday afternoon.
