The Government does not intend to use a once-off cost-of-living package to mitigate the fall-out of tariffs if the EU cannot reach a deal with the US. Enterprise minister Peter Burke has ruled out a one-off package in this year's budget saying that to continue multi-billion euro cost-of-living measures each year will make inflation worse.

The Social Democrats are split on whether to bring suspended TD Eoin Hayes back into the fold, with concerns that Sinéad Gibney could leave party if he is readmitted. On Wednesday, Ms Gibney repeatedly declined to rule out leaving the party if Mr Hayes was readmitted to the Social Democrats parliamentary party. Ms Gibney, a TD for Dublin Rathdown, said she would not be commenting on “hypotheticals”, despite being repeatedly asked if she would leave the party if Mr Hayes was re-admitted.

With 48 hours to go before Donald Trump announces a raft of tariffs, the Government will now up efforts to mitigate the impact of what could be one of the biggest hits to the Irish economy since the financial crash. The tariffs are expected to be universal across all European exports into the US and to be in the region of 20%. The Government is spending €2.75m to promote the Mother and Baby Homes redress scheme in countries that have a significant Irish diaspora. The five-year campaign involves print, radio, billboard, and online advertisements running in Ireland, Britain, the United States, Canada, and Australia. The first two phases of the campaign have been completed as of December 2024 and the spend to date is €1.8m.

More than 300,000 people are waiting for diagnostic scans leading to longer wait times to begin vital treatments. The number of people on waiting lists has increased by 227,000 in the last three years and the figure continues to rise. At the end of 2024, there were 300,115 patients waiting for scans, including 94,762 on the list for an MRI and 88,270 people waiting for a CT. Other diagnostic scans, including angiogram, electrocardiogram and bone scans, are not included in the data.
