With 48 hours to go before Donald Trump announces a raft of tariffs, the Government will now up efforts to mitigate the impact of what could be one of the biggest hits to the Irish economy since the financial crash. The tariffs are expected to be universal across all European exports into the US and to be in the region of 20%. They are also expected to be followed by further additional tariffs on key sectors, particularly for Ireland, such as pharmaceuticals.

The Government is spending €2.75m to promote the Mother and Baby Homes redress scheme in countries that have a significant Irish diaspora. The five-year campaign involves print, radio, billboard, and online advertisements running in Ireland, Britain, the United States, Canada, and Australia. The first two phases of the campaign have been completed as of December 2024 and the spend to date is €1.8m.

More than 300,000 people are waiting for diagnostic scans leading to longer wait times to begin vital treatments. The number of people on waiting lists has increased by 227,000 in the last three years and the figure continues to rise. At the end of 2024, there were 300,115 patients waiting for scans, including 94,762 on the list for an MRI and 88,270 people waiting for a CT. Other diagnostic scans, including angiogram, electrocardiogram and bone scans, are not included in the data.

The story of a University of Limerick (UL) student who experienced a targeted and sustained campaign of harassment by a group of 200 men has been described as shocking by the former further education minister. Patrick O'Donovan, who is from Limerick, said it is "alarming to see a young woman targeted in this way". Influencer Ella Deasy posted a TikTok video in August 2024 looking to make friends after securing a room in Kilmurry Village, a popular first-year student complex on the UL campus.
