A survey of 2,000 people by KP Snacks-owned brand Tyrrells found that half of people (49%) favoured the local pub over other types of venue. This was followed by 16% that favoured gastro pubs; 11% sports bars and 10% who preferred wine bars. The remaining did not favour any pubs or favoured other types of venues. The research also revealed that 51% of people go to the pub to catch up with friends and family.

In February,the Scottish Government announced it was considering whether local authorities could be given the power to introduce a tax on cruise ships. It launched a consultation seeking views on the practicalities of such a levy, as well as the potential market implications and effect on local economies and communities.

It comes as the Government unveiled a new programme that will see young people benefit from 120,000 new training opportunities as part of a “radical skills revolution.”The measures, backed by a £3bn apprenticeship budget, will open up opportunities for young people to in areas such as bricklaying, carpentry and health care.

Chef Tom De Keyser, alongside The Tom Kerridge Group, will be opening The Chalk Freehouse on Monday 16 June. De Keyser, who has worked alongside Kerridge for 12 years, was most recently head chef at The Hand and Flowers in Marlow, which has two Michelin stars. He also previously served as head chef at The Coach, another of Kerridge’s Marlow venues, which holds one Michelin star.

The couple, who took over the St Austell tenancy in 2010, have worked with the brewery for 25 years, and before that worked for Morlands. They won the top accolade of BII Licensees of the Year (LOYA) in 2018. Tanya told the Morning Advertiser (The MA): “It was a really hard decision. It is a beautiful, lovely pub. It was tough. “But it seems that for the first time ever we can’t see that light at the end of tunnel anymore.
