The season is going well according to Freeport boys’ basketball head coach Daryl Johnson, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement amongst the Red Devils. Currently, the team is mired in a two-game losing skid, the most recent defeat coming last Saturday at the hands of Valley Stream South, 80-73, in overtime. Noah Patterson, Freeport’s point guard and leading scorer, banked in 20 points. Shawn Broyles added 12 points and Jacob Jordan chipped in 9.

After its 68-54 victory over New Hyde Park last Saturday, the Mepham girls’ basketball team is on a five-game win streak with an 8-3 overall record. Makayla Daube and Sophia Beck posted double-doubles to lead Mepham to the win, with Daube scoring 26 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, and Beck adding 20 points and 10 rebounds. Daube also crossed the 1,000-career point threshold.

The College of Charleston’s offense was just a notch too good for the Hofstra University women’s basketball team in their first loss in conference play, 64-51, on Friday, Jan. 11. “Tough game for us,” said Hofstra’s head coach Danielle Santos Atkinson. “They are very aggressive, which we knew, they’re very intense defensively, we knew they were going to press us for 40 minutes.

A couple of games into the season and it’s time for the West Hempstead boys’. basketball team to do a temperature check. In the Rams’ Dec. 17 game against East Rockaway, a 58-42 win, senior Isaiah Blunt lead the pack with 27 points after scoring 22 in the first half. “He’s athletic, he can score as well as anyone probably on Long Island but definitely in Nassau County,” head coach Eric Rubin said.

The wrestling season is underway, and the Uniondale wrestling program is aggressive to get to the mat. For coach Tim Godoy, the season has been going on for quite some time, carrying lessons from the summer and fall. “Preseason’s really been about not only just training for wrestling but mentally training as well,” Godoy said.
