By Midge RaymondOne of the goals of Rogue Community Cat Rescue is to “build a community base around animals and people,” says president and executive director Amanda Linnehan. The organization’s June 28 Miles for Meows walkathon and community event aims at doing just that. “We wanted a way to get the community more involved in what we’re doing, which is not just cat rescue,” Linnehan says.

By Midge RaymondOver the decade I was a shelter volunteer, I could always tell the stray cats from the orphaned ones as soon as I walked into the cat rooms. The strays weren’t thrilled to be in kennels, of course, but they were warm and fed, and life was a bit better than being out on the streets. By Midge RaymondIt’s 7:30 a.m. on a foggy, 32-degree February Friday, and the FOTAS Community Spay & Neuter Clinic at 3265 Biddle Road in Medford is checking in cats for the day’s surgeries. Today’s felines are coming in from FOTAS (Friends of the Animals) foster families as well as clients of Rogue Valley Street Dogs. Just before 8 a.m., two cats without appointments are dropped off, and the staff tells their owner they will try to get them fixed today.

By Midge RaymondUnlike dogs, cats are not travel friendly. Despite the abundance of social media posts of cats in cars, on boats or in backpacks, most cats prefer nothing more than to stay in their own environment even when you’re not there. And while some dogs enjoy going to a boarding facility where they have play groups and lots of social time, boarding for cats usually means they spend your vacation in a kennel.
