If we think of a nation as a building, then citizens are the very pillars that keep it standing and the government is like a roof over the head of the people that protects them from the elements and keeps the pillars connected. However, if the roof becomes so big and heavy that the pillars are unable to support it, then at some point the pillars crumble and the building collapses.

If you speak to a PTI supporter, you will find him convinced that journalists who criticize Imran Khan are ‘lifafa’ journalists who get money for opposing the PTI. Being such passionate supporters of Imran Khan, they honestly cannot see how anyone fair and honest can critique or criticize their leader. These days we also see PML-N and establishment supporters argue that those judges who rule in favour of Imran Khan must be ‘sahulatkar’ judges.

A NEW budget is upon us and it does not herald the reforms and economic revival we need. It is, as most of our budgets are, a set of measures to tax the already taxed (without touching property, agriculture and the NFC) and meeting the IMF conditions. Old habits die hard and this is true for this PML-N budget as well.

Although the inflation number for May has come down to 11% from over 30% in May last year, inflation for this fiscal year is still 24%. Our economic growth rate is an anaemic 2.2%, which is less than our population growth rate of 2.55%. Last year, our economic growth rate was close to zero. Thus over the last two years Pakistanis have become poorer by almost 3%. And, given the lopsided effects of inflation, poor Pakistanis have become poorer by an even higher percentage.
