Girls learn about navigation, nature in Heights Parks program

The City of Harker Heights’ Parks and Recreation Department wrapped up its sixth and final Girls Outdoors Summer program at the Harker Heights Community Park early Saturday morning. Led by Kailie Gomez, the Outdoors Program coordinator for the Harker Heights Parks and Recreation Department, several girls got hands-on with basic land navigation and learned how to journal and observe nature.

Joyous music filled the air while members of the The Agape Church of God in Christ in Killeen and youth walked around the chapel hall greeting new people and taking selfies with them, kicking off the second annual “I Am ‘Soul’ Out for Jesus” youth conference and sneaker ball. Coco Johnson, the church’s media relations specialist and youth president, talked about the importance of investing in the youth.

Young sisters Aurora and Elina Diaz raised their hands, waving them silently in the air, holding in their excitement, the best the young girls could, each practicing a “silent cheer” as instructed by the Creature Teacher Emiley Brewer. At the same time, Brewer revealed a very excitable and very mischievous coatimundi raccoon. Coatimundi, the Creature Teacher told the large audience of young children, can get either very excited or very scared if you’re too loud.

Kern Park hosts city’s annual Parks Bash

Harker Heights’ smallest, oldest, and mostly forgotten park, Kern Park, had a little life breathed back into it Saturday as the site played host to the city’s annual Parks Bash. The water-centered event brought hundreds of locals to cool off and enjoy the often overlooked park on the city’s north side.

She set it down asked in an exasperated voice “How much do you want to see?”Killeen resident Wanda Gunter collects oral histories, and inside of this single plastic container are the written narratives of slaves, politicians, teachers, survivors, locals and families from the Killeen area and beyond. She met with the Herald recently at the Harker Heights city library to talk about her vast history collection.
