Thousands are expected to pass through the gates of the Auburn Botanic Gardens as the annual Sydney Cherry Blossom festival gets under way. Billed as the city’s ‘most Instagrammable’ flower festival, the event offers ‘a slice of Japan’ with picture-perfect blooms as well as bonsai, manga and origami demonstrations, Japanese cuisine and live appearances to celebrate Hello Kitty’s 50th birthday.

Beneath the turquoise waters off Heron Island lies a huge, brain-shaped Porites coral that, in health, would be a rude shade of purplish-brown. Today that coral outcrop, or bommie, shines snow white. Prof Terry Hughes, a coral bleaching expert at James Cook University, estimates this living boulder is at least 300 years old.
