The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has voted unanimously to add new language to the MA Sports Wagering Catalog explicitly prohibiting bets on individual collegiate sports awards. The MGC’s sports wagering division recommended the rule change in order to clear up any confusion over whether such wagers are permissible in the Commonwealth. Commissioners voted 4-0 to add the new language to the Massachusetts sports betting catalog at the MGC’s Sept. 26 meeting.

Massachusetts sportsbook operators participated in a Sept. 11 Massachusetts Gaming Commission meeting after all but one backed out of a roundtable discussion in May. The meeting marked the first time U.S. operators have publicly discussed the practice of limiting how much certain players can wager after being deemed to have violated terms and conditions.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has named Carrie Torrisi as the new chief of the regulatory body’s sports wagering division. The hiring follows the recent retirement of gambling industry veteran Bruce Band, who had been Massachusetts sports betting director since 2023. Torrisi, a graduate of Boston’s Suffolk University Law School, has been with the MGC since 2015, serving as associate general counsel for nearly seven years before becoming deputy general counsel in 2022.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission voted unanimously to forbid all wagering on the Chinese Football Association (CFA) on sports betting platforms in the Commonwealth. The vote came just days after the Chinese soccer league banned 43 players and officials for life, the result of a two-year investigation into allegations of widespread match-fixing in the sport. The CFA is a member of the international soccer governing body FIFA.

Bruce Band, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s director of sports wagering, is retiring. Commissioners discussed Band’s retirement at the MGC’s Aug. 29 public meeting, which Band said would be his last. Band joined the MGC in 2014 and has more than 45 years of experience in regulatory and casino operations. Three weeks ago, the MGC posted a job listing to find a new “division chief” for the sports wagering division.
