WESTCHASE — Hillsborough County is considering allocating money to fund a crosswalk in front of Westchase Elementary on Linebaugh Avenue, sparking debate among community groups and residents. The Westchase Community Association opposes the project, while several residents support the crosswalk or at least want safety concerns addressed with alternate solutions. The proposed crosswalk would be located at the school’s second entrance on Linebaugh Avenue’s westbound lane.

CITRUS PARK — Construction to replace the 111-year-old Rocky Creek Bridge is progressing, with the new structure on the Upper Tampa Bay Trail just north of the Wilsky Boulevard trailhead tentatively scheduled for completion in late 2025, Hillsborough County officials told the Tampa Beacon. A routine inspection by county engineers in late 2023 found the bridge unsafe, forcing its immediate closure.

LAND O’ LAKES — Alex Kossmann is getting off the fence about his fencing academy. The Land O’ Lakes fencing enthusiast started the Land O’ Lakes Fencing Academy in 2023 with a handful of students. Today, with membership doubled and doing well at competitions, Kossmann wants to expands the academy’s classes. In addition to offering classes twice weekly at Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex, he aims to add them at Wesley Chapel Recreation Complex.

LAND O’ LAKES — Anna Quatrino had a joyous panic attack, so her Land O’ Lakes girls flag football teammates paused their celebrations to check on the freshman receiver. “It was just so much, especially when I realized I won (us) the game,” she said, still a bit out of breath.
