Walk the eastern Paris suburb of Montreuil today and clues still abound to the area’s former fame in an industry more usually associated with the countryside. “Rue Girardot, initiateur de la culture fruitière à Montreuil au XVIIième siècle” reads a street sign, named after the knight and musketeer Etienne Girardot, who became a gardener and started a fruit-growing tradition here that would last almost four centuries.

ROME -- in the streets of the Eternal City, the Belgian sprinter Tim Merlier won the last stage of the “Giro d’Italia”. The stage was his third victory in this edition of the Giro. Unfortunately, his main competitor, Italian Jonathan Milan, who also won three stages, had to cope with a mechanical failure in the sprint’s build-up. Milan, however, wins the points classification. As almost everyone expected, Slovene Tadej Pogacar won the competition overall.

ROME -- Saturday, Slovene cyclist Tadej Pogačar won the Tuscan race for the second time in his career. Like the first time, in 2022, he broke away early, managed to stay ahead and on a crowded Piazza del Campo crossed the finish line ahead of all of his competitors. Strade Bianche owes its name to the white gravel roads South of Siena. About one-third of the race takes place on gravel.
